Do you have a robust fire alarm system that can protect your home from fires this winter? Just because summer’s over doesn’t mean you can put the brakes on home fire safety. According to statistics, 43 percent of fire incidents take place during winter. That’s almost half of the total fatalities each year!

Use a fire alarm system to put a freeze on fire emergencies. Here are some tips on how you can keep your home fire safe this winter.

  1. Make sure that your fire alarm system meets the requirements of the amended Queensland Smoke Alarm legislation.

Under the new smoke alarm rules, all new smoke alarm that will go into every property starting January 1, 2017,  must comply with  Australian Standards 3786:2014.

Unlike ionisation smoke alarm, the photoelectric type is meant for slow-flaming fires that are common in the home. It provides an earlier and faster alert, giving tenants more time to escape the burning home. A robust fire alarm system can spell the difference between survival and death during a fire emergency.

  1. Check fireplaces and chimneys.

Fireplaces and chimneys – They are a popular spot in the home during winter. However, without proper safety measures, they could cause fatal fires. Make sure that chimneys are clean before using them for this season. Always use a fireguard when dealing with open fires. Do NOT throw rubbish, particularly flammable items into the fireplace.

  1. Have a home fire evacuation plan.

Having a robust fire alarm system and taking property safety precautions don’t necessarily mean that a fire will never hit your home. The fire comes like a thief in the night – it happens when you least expect it! It’s always best to have a plan on how to evacuate.

Have a home fire evacuation plan. Discuss it with the entire family, and conduct drills to familiarise everyone with the plan.

Whether it’s summer, autumn, winter, or spring, fire emergencies can happen when we least expect them. Protect your family, property, and loved ones by having a fire alarm system that puts a freeze on fire emergencies.
